Although he knew it was useless, he tried to follow her, and lost her in the revelers. Finally he entered an alcove near the staircase leading to the rooms for the Queen’s Maids. Waiting in the shadows, her words echoed in his mind. He’d half-hoped she would decide to return to the continent. It would be easier to never see her again. It would be torture to hear of her marrying, to hear of her activities, but it would be from a distance. To hear her state that she wasn’t leaving, that he would see her at court, within the Order, those words brought fresh pain to a heart he’d been sure he didn’t have. But her last words about finding her own distractions and amusements, that little smile like she would give him after they’d fucked –– those brought a rage that had his hand on his sword. He’d had Anna first. All her sweet innocence, he’d coaxed and taught her sensuality and been welcomed into her warmth. The thought of another man taking her to bed, knowing her the way he had, filled him with a possessive fury to hunt her down and claim her before the court, the Queen and the Order.

When she came by, he was tempted to do just that and to hell with the wrath of Walsingham or anyone else. Noise came down the corridor as the Queen’s Maids returned to their rooms. He listened carefully to the voices, searched their faces. Anna wasn’t among them.
